SELFIE MADNESS BY RECYCLE GROUP

Text: Ümmühan Kazanç

Recycle Group, “Selfies”, 2015, thermoshaped plastic mesch, 250 x 400 cm (98 3/8 x 157 1/2 in.).
I have privilidge to met art works by Recycle Group at Suzanne Tarasieve Gallery (Paris) Stand. Recycle Group who have awarded Kandinsky Prize, (2010 Best Young Artist), Innovation Prize exhibition (2009, NCCA Moscow, Russia) and Kandinsky Prize (2009, London) were in Istanbul for ArtInternational Fair and exhibited their works titled as “Selfies”, “Selfie 1” and “Selfie 2”. These works were among most visited art works in ArtInternational Fair. “Selfies” and “Selfie Sticks” are part of our lives and Recycle Group interpreted this social media madness throught using classical sculptures handling selfie sticks. Everybody is Greek or Roman Gods/Goddess or Kings/Queens! As the name of the Group suggests Recycle Group use recycled material to create their art works and they have used thermoshaped plastic mesch in Selfie Group.

Recycle Group also opened an important exhibition called “Conversion”, at SantʼAntonin Church in 56th Venice Biennale, Venice in 2015.

Recycle Group live and work in Krasnodar, Russia. Recycle Group consists of Andrey Blokhin (b. 1987) and Georgy Kuznetsov (b. 1985), two contemporary Russian artists who work primarily with industrial mediums such as acrylic, plastic mesh, and polyurethane rubber to examine contemporary culture through a quasi-archaeological lens.

Recycle Group, “Selfie 1”, 2015,
thermoshaped plastic mesch, 200 x 100 cm.,
(78 3/4 x 39 3/8 in.).
As their name suggests, the duo is concerned about the rising level of material waste as a byproduct of widespread consumerism. The wall sculpture “Car Skeleton” (2014) partially entombs miscellaneous electronic parts and machinery in a way that evokes fossilized remains of ancient civilizations, questioning whether the aspects of today’s throwaway, technology-obsessed society will be worth immortalizing in history later. Their works also draw upon classical Western traditions such as narrative relief carving and Christian iconography to compare contemporary times with other histories – social media with religion, corporate leaders with kings, and online existence with mausoleums.

“TÜYLERİM DİKEN DİKEN”: BİR SANATÇININ ÇIĞLIĞI

“MY HAIR STAND ON END”: THE CRY OF AN ARTIST

“MY HAIR STAND ON END” by ERDAL DUMAN
Erdal Duman explains conceptual background of  his Works titled as “My Hair Stand On End”: “In order to survive in this World, using up all our creativity, we have been destroying everything around us, heading fort he ideal future.
We have very well done in this respect, which is so unique among all creatures. This deed of us makes my hair stand on end. With our innate intention of destroying others who have different religion, lifestyle on so on, with their lack of empathy for others, humanity will only achieve to survive by turning itself to an organization of individuals all uniformed, or all the same. Then there will be no women, no children, no nature, no animals, no race, no faith to eradicate, at which point it will manage to deserve its ideal form without any variety and diversity.

ERDAL DUMAN BIOGRAPHY
When the object is represented in a different way than the usual, it takes on a new definition. The image on the verge of reality creates a replica that constantly sabotages its original, distorts and disconnects with its own reality, giving way to the emergence of an image that is identical with the original yet metaphorically transformed in terms of meaning.
When images replace reality, human consciousness moves to a different angle. Hence it is impossible to conceive reality at this space between the situation itself and its conceptualization. The indicator that emerges in that interim leads the mind astray, superseding the sight. When we think about the images of the recent Gulf War, we can draw the same conclusion: In fact Baudrillard underlined this by saying “Gulf War did not take place”. Rather than a war that caused the death of thousands of people, the assumption referred by this sentence is the question if those images that we watched were real. Even the question if all that has happened was a construct, cannot find its reality. Everything is there for the world to see yet dissimulated perfectly.
Erdal Duman borrows the shapes of the objects that represent violent and tragic realities, and he rebuilds them. These false ammunitions conceal their true existence while reflecting the false reality of the other. In fact, in contradiction to their defective reality, they manifest a more complete reality by showing their existence in their absence.
Erdal Duman’s sculptures are as permeable as the images of war. Looks pass through them without touching anything, as if they were camouflaged by space. Space appears to be another component of these sculptures, where the meaning is hidden. Space refers to the identical yet unseen and undisclosed part of reality. Still these objects are glamorous and bright with neon colors to catch our glances. They are as ravishing as war instruments. Because they are alienated from reality and their meanings are camouflaged.
Born in 1976 in Germany, Erdal Duman obtained his BFA in Sculpture in 2002 in Hacettepe University in Ankara, and completed his MFA from the same institution in 2007. In 2011 he opened his first solo show, "Ammunition" at artSümer. He currently lives and works in Ankara.

VICTORIA MIRO GALLERY’DEN ARTINTERNATIONAL FUARI İÇİN ÖZEL BİR SEÇKİ

Grayson Perry, “In its Familiarity Golden”, 2015, Tapestry, 290x343 cm, 1141/8x1351/8 in (GP 547), Courtesy of Victoria Miro, London.

Ingar Dragset ve Michael Elmgreen, “He (Copper Green)”, 2013, epoxy resin, polyurethane cast, metal lacquer (copper), green patinated 190x140x100 cm, 743/4x551/8x393/8 in (Edition 109), Courtesy of Victoria Miro, London.
‘Deniz Erkeği’ İstanbul’da!
Hipergerçekçi heykelleri ve mekanlara yaptıkları sürpriz yerleştirmeleriyle dikkat çeken, Berlin’de Nazi döneminde öldürülen eşcinsellerin anısına yaptıkları “Memorial to the Homosexuals” ve Teksas’ın göbeğine kurdukları “Prada Marfa” gibi kült işleriyle de tanınan İskandinav ikili Ingar Dragset ve Michael Elmgreen’in meşhur “Deniz Erkeği” (He - Copper Green, 2013) heykelinin de sergileneceği Victoria Miro standının en çok ilgi görecek isimlerinden biri de hiç kuşkusuz Yayoi Kusama olacak.

Yayoi Kusama, “Image of First Love”, 2013, Sewn stuffed fabric, paint, metal 105x41x94 cm, 413/8x161/8x371/8 in, (KUSA 810), Courtesy of Victoria Miro, London.
Kusama’nın ‘İlk Aşk’ı
Sadece ülkesi Japonya’nın değil, uluslararası sanat platformunun en sıra dışı sanatçılarından biri sayılan, 60 yılı aşkın sanat hayatı boyunca performanstan, enstalasyona, happening’den resme, hatta edebiyat ve sinemaya uzanan farklı disiplinler arasında gezinen, renkli-aynalı düzenlemeleri ve kendi yaptığı puantiyeli kıyafetleri ve kabak heykelleri, optik desenleri, siyah-kırmızı noktalarını yerleştirdiği işleriyle tanınan, sarsıcı hayat hikâyesiyle de çok konuşulan Yayoi Kusama’nın 2013 tarihli “Image of First Love” adlı heykeli de Victoria Miro standında görülebilecek.

Yılın merakla beklenen uluslararası çağdaş ve modern sanat fuarı ARTINTERNATIONAL, 4-6 Eylül tarihlerinde Haliç Kongre Merkezi’nde gerçekleşecek. İspanya’dan Çin’e, İtalya’dan Bulgaristan’a, 27 ülkeden 88 galeri ve 400’den fazla sanatçının katılacağı fuar, bir kez daha sanat tutkunlarının odağı olacak.
