Ryota Matsumoto

He received Master of Architecture from University of Pennsylvania in 2007 after studying at Architectural Association in London and Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art in early 90’s. His art and built work are featured in numerous publications and exhibitions internationally. His current interest gravitates around the embodiment of cultural possibilities in art, architecture, and urban topography.

Description of art works
The artworks of Ryota Matsumoto develop and demonstrate the hybrid/multi-layered process, where varying scale, juxtaposition of different forms, intertwined textures/tones are applied to reflect the spatial conditions of our ever-evolving urban environments. They are created as the catalyst for depicting speculative changes in our notions of cities and infrastructures.

The drawings explore a hybrid drawing technique combining both traditional media (ink, acrylic, and graphite) and digital media (algorithmic processing, scripting and image compositing with custom software).

RYOTA MATSUMOTO: DRAWINGS THAT FLOATING ON THE EDGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND ART

In fact, Ryota Matsumoto started his career as an architect, he has been questioning the boundaries of art and architecture with his art drawings since last few years.

INTERVIEW BY UMMUHAN KAZANC

Dear Ryota, thank you very much for accepting my interview request. Fisrt of could you introduce yourself? As far as I understand you got your bachelor degree on Art and then you got your master degree on Architecture. Now, do you work as an artist or both?
It is my pleasure to discuss about my work with you. I received both bachelor and master degrees in architecture. During my studies in the States and UK, I also took courses in art and art history. I believe that both art and architecture share a lot in common in terms of engaging with forms, structures and color. They also act as catalysts that reflect ever-changing societies in which we live in. So it is the natural progression for me to focus on drawings after 20 years of experience in the field of architecture and I think of myself as both designer and artist. It is sometimes not easy to draw the line between two fields.

You say your drawings develop and demonstrate the hybrid/multi-layered process where varying scale, juxtaposition of different forms, intertwined textures/tones are applied to reinvent and question the spatial conditions of architectural drawings. Could you explain your technique in detail? You combine both traditional media (ink, acrylic, and graphite) and digital media (algorithmic processing, scripting and image compositing with custom software) drawing technique. Do you apply these Works on canvas or special paper?
I always employ varied techniques and approaches depending on themes or settings that I deal with. Most of time, forms and series of lines or curves are created digitally by generative processes and some of them are drawn by acrylic paint and ink. Then these mutiple images are combined and reconfigured with the use of  software.  Therefore, I would say I work with both paper and computer.

At first glance, we see perfect harmony, balance in your art Works. They look like a colorful digital art Works. Actually do you critize urbanism? What is you current interest? What is the theme of your Works?
I am fascinated with the idea of juxtaposing or colliding familiar elements with something that are unknown or intangible. For instance, I often take up the organic fused with the technological as the main theme of my work. The same goes for titles of artworks as well.

You have very succesful career as an architect. Why did you choose to concentrate on art?
I still follow the same career path actually. I just focus more on one aspect of architecture rather than going through the whole process of designing buildings, right now.

Your art forms look like dancing on the air? Do you inspire from other sources?
Architecture is traditionally context-bound. It means any architectural works are constrained by surrounding environments. So floating in the air is one way of freeing architecture from preexisting conditions or perceptions that we are caught up in.

Urbanism inspires you but If someone force to choose you live in urban or rural area, what do you prefer?
It’d be nice to live in urban area in weekdays and in rural area in weekends.

Have you ever been to Turkey or Istanbul? Do you want to attend an art Show in Istanbul? Do you know any Turkish artist or do you follow Turkish Contemporary Art?
Unfortunatelly, I’ve never been to Turkey. I look forward to taking part in any art events or discussing about art and architecture in Turkey.

Lastly, could we learn about your future plans?
I’ve spent most of time producing my own artworks these few years. Hopefully, I could find more time to travel and like to collaborate with artists and designers across the world in the future.
